- Avocado — to buy3
- Red onion — to buy1/2
- Tomato — to buy1
- Fresh cilantro — to buy1 bunch
- Chili pepper — to buy1
- Lime — to buy1
Preparation
Choose ripe avocados (they should yield slightly to gentle finger pressure). Cut them in half, remove the pit and scoop the flesh into a bowl with a spoon.
Mash the flesh with a fork, keeping a few chunks for texture — guacamole that's too smooth loses its charm.
Add the very finely chopped red onion, the seeded and diced tomato, chopped cilantro and sliced chili.
Season generously with lime juice (which also keeps the avocado from browning) and salt, mix gently with a fork without over-mashing.
Taste and adjust the seasoning, then serve immediately with tortillas or corn chips — guacamole oxidizes fast, so don't make it too far ahead.
